RESPONDING TO THE POSSIBILITY OF MAGIC BEANS IN YOUR TEENAGE CHILD'S LIFE: Supporting Your Child’s Growth When Opportunities--and Uncertainties-- Arise

In the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods, parents and children address issues of growing up, wish fulfillment and its consequences.

At first, the characters of young Jack and his mother struggle to get by financially. Then, after learning that he has acquired so-called “magic beans,” she angrily tosses them on the ground. They grow into a very high beanstalk. Jack climbs it and has quite an adventure.

The decisions that a parent makes on behalf of her child have repercussions for each of them and possible for many other people, too. When a parent makes such decisions, the results may become apparent immediately, or within a matter of months, or even years afterwards.

When presented with the possibility of “magic beans” in her child’s life, how does a parent know how best to respond?
