Favored Ways to Spend Time for the Next Day or So

WORK IT!

The Moon trudges through Virgo until 6:38 pm ET (GMT-4) tomorrow.

Key words for favored ways to spend time (other things being equal) include...

... work, mental activity, and details.

TELL US ABOUT IT

How are you spending your time today, while the Moon is in Virgo?

Post below to let us know!

FOR FURTHER IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO SPEND YOUR TIME...

... each month, while the Moon is in Virgo (for two or three days, each time ... such as today and much of tomorrow), here's what you can do:

1. Get a copy of your birth chart.

(If you don't already have a copy of it, then you get a free copy of it by going to www.astro.com and entering your birth date, time, city, and state/country in the appropriate form.)

2. With a copy of your birth chart in hand (or in sight, on your screen), figure out which house (or houses) contain the sign Virgo.

(For an example of how to do this, see the section "AN EXAMPLE: MY BIRTH CHART," below.)

NOTE: Depending on technical factors (which I won't go into right now), Virgo may occupy one, two, or even three houses (or "pie slices") of your particular chart.

3. For each of the houses that Virgo occupies in your chart, combine

(A) one or more of the key words that I noted above for Moon in Virgo (i.e., work, mental activities, and details)

with

(B) one or more key words for whichever house(s) in your chart contain Virgo.

NOTE: For a house-by-house run-down of what each of the 12 houses of your birth chart symbolize, see my article at http://www.proudphoenix.com/houses.html

Feel free to "mix and match" the way that you combine key words for the Moon in Virgo with key words for the house (or houses) that apply to your chart.

Yes, part of astrology is technical/memorization kinds of stuff, but another part of astrology (and, hopefully, it's a much larger part of it!) is creative/intuitive/experiment-and-see-what-works-for-you kinds of stuff.

So let yourself be creative. Experiment and see what works for you. And if something comes to you intuitively, then consider it at least as much as you do anything that comes to you through logical reasoning.

AN EXAMPLE: MY BIRTH CHART

Take a look at my birth chart.

In my chart (as in every person's birth chart), each section (or “pie slice”) represents one house.

The houses are numbered from 1 to 12, starting with the section that is immediately below the horizon line (the horizontal line, which is located on the left side of the chart).

The houses are numbered in a counterclockwise direction around the circle.

Therefore, if you start at the 1st house (the house that lies immediately below the horizon line, on the left side of the chart) ... and you count from 1 to 5... then you should find yourself ending at the 5th house.

Here's how you'll know if you landed in the 5th house or not:

The 5th house lies in the lower right-hand quarter of the chart. It contains numbers and symbols, including the symbol for the sign Virgo--twice--and the symbols for the planets Uranus and Pluto.

(Fortunately, if you are using a birth chart from astro.com for yourself,  the houses are numbered in their charts. To identify a house by number, just look toward the middle of the circle to see its number.)

I'll say more about what the houses mean in a moment. For now, though, let's continue with getting to know where the houses are in relation to other parts of the circles.

Specifically, let's consider where the houses are located in relation to the signs of the zodiac (in relation to the sign Virgo, to be exact).

If you look at the outer edge (or "rim") of the circle, somewhat toward the lower-right-hand side of it, then you should see the symbol (or "glyph") for the sign of Virgo there.

(Virgo's symbol looks kind of like the a cursive letter "m" with an extra "hump" toward the right-hand side of it.)

If you look at the numbers near that symbol, you should see that they are "04" and "38." The first number ("04") refers to degrees, and the second number ("38") refers to minutes.

Virgo (like each of the 12 zodiac signs) is 30-degrees long.

(A circle equals 360 degrees, right? And there are 12 zodiac signs. So if you divide 360 by 12, you get 30. Each sign equals 30 degrees of 1/12 of the circle.)

Now, since there are 30 degrees in a sign, and 4 degrees 38 minutes (or 38/60 of a degree) Virgo lies at the "doorway" (or "cusp") between the 4th house and the 5th house of my birth chart...

... that means that most (but not all) of Virgo lies in my 5th house.

To be more specific about that:

The first 4 degrees and 38 minutes of Virgo lie in my 4th house, and the rest of Virgo lie in my 5th house.

Now then, let's return to the matter of what the houses of a birth chart mean.

Each house is associated with a certain set of issues and activities in our life.

Depending on whichever houses are emphasized in our charts, we can expect for a higher power (or God, or Goddess, or Spirit, or the Cosmic Wow or destiny, or ... whatever power you believe in) to present us with certain existential or moral questions--questions that are related to those houses.

How we answer these questions and what we learn in the process of coming up with our answers are up to us.

Again, for a quick-and-dirty version of what I consider each of the 12 houses to mean, see http://www.proudphoenix.com/houses.html

WHAT ABOUT YOUR EMPTY HOUSES?

If you're concerned about the fact that some of the houses in your chart are empty, worry not!

With 10 "planets" (i.e., the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, ... Neptune, plus Pluto) to go around, we all have some empty houses in our birth charts. That's just the mathematical facts, ma'am.  ;-)

Even though some of your houses are empty, they still matter in your life. You still have work to do ... experiences to have ... live to live ... and songs to sing ... in those parts of your life.

(We astrologers use techniques other than planets-in-signs-in-houses to get at the details of such matters.)

"You Have to Reinvent Yourself," He Said

"You have to reinvent yourself," he said. “Go on with what capabilities you have. Just do the best you can.”

This quote from Todd Spaur, a muralist whose work and life story are described in an article that I found on HappyNews.com, reminds me of just the sort of outlook on life that I aim to encourage, through the work that I do as an astrologer.

It's part of why I named my business The Proud Phoenix ("Astrology to Help You Transform Your Life").

I think that, sometimes, in order to moving forward in our lives, we can continue "simply" "building" on our pasts, and it can be great when we can do that...

... but sometimes, in order to do it, we have to do something radically new or different, in the face of one sort of life transition or another...

... and I think that therein lies some of the more daunting and some of the richer, most deeply satisfying potential that comes with living the human experience.

Coming Soon: The Astrology of Relating

This Saturday, I’ll attend a webinar--three talks by professional astrologers about the astrology of relating.

The talks include:

  • “Transforming at Moments of Relationship Crisis” by Greg Bogart
  • “Key to Relationship Destiny: The Charts of Relationship: The Composite, Davison Relationship, and the First Meeting Charts” by Terry Lamb
  • “Soul Mates: Myth or Reality?” by Eric Meyers

I look forward to blogging about related topics afterwards.

Today: Better for Routine Than For New Things

From 6:56 am till 8:31 pm today ET (GMT-4), the Moon is Void of Course, so during this period, stick to routine matters as much as possible.

If you're going to take up something new or something that's not routine today, then try to do it after 8:31 pm.

You'll be likelier to make more headway then.

And if you can't postpone something new / non-routine till that time, then allow for the possibility that circumstances will keep matters in sort of a "holding pattern" until after 8:31 p.m.

(You may, in fact, be able to make considerable headway before that time ... but I wouldn't bet a lot of money on it.)

KEEPING VOID-OF-COURSE PERIODS IN PERSPECTIVE

By the way, such a "holding pattern" time (that is, a time when the Moon is Void of Course) happens every two or three days.

Each time it happens, it lasts anywhere from a minute to a day and a half or so.

And though it happens, the world keeps on turning.

So while it is a better time for routine matters than for tackling other things...

... it's also nothing that you haven't handled a thousand times before.

Make the Most of Mercury & Uranus Retrograde

Between today and tomorrow (Eastern Time), both transiting Mercury (the Messenger of Intellectual Expression) and Uranus (the Wizard of Individuality) turn retrograde.

That is, as they both move about ... up in the heavens, in real time… they both appear to start moving backwards as observed from our vantage point here on Planet Earth.

MERCURY (TAKE ONE): "HOLD THAT THOUGHT"

As far as Mercury "doin' the backward boogie" goes, here's my advice for how to make the most of the next few weeks...

Think about whatever sorts of ideas you might have considered (but not yet acted on) since early April, when Mercury last turned “direct" (i.e., last stopped being retrograde).

Now, while Mercury is retro ... which, for almost all intents and purposes, means from this past Thursday (July 6) till Monday (August 13)… take time to review, refine, revise … re-whatever! … your ideas.

Lay the groundwork now, so that ... come mid-August (when Mercury goes direct again)... you and your ideas will be Ready for Prime Time.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come mid-August, you can act on one or more of your Bright Ideas  :-)  … knowing that it (or they) will be of a much higher quality (and therefore much likelier to succeed) than might otherwise be the case.

MERCURY (TAKE TWO): "ON SECOND THOUGHT..."

Likewise, think about whatever sorts of ideas you might have already acted on since early April ... when Mercury last turned “direct" (i.e., last stopped being retrograde).

Now, while Mercury is retro... which, for almost all intents and purposes, means from this past Thursday (July 6) till Monday (August 13) … again, take time to review, refine, revise … re-whatever! … your ideas.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come mid-August (when Mercury goes direct again) … you and your not-so-new (but very-much-improved) ideas will be Ready for Prime Time.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come mid-August, you can implement your Bright Ideas version 2.0  :-)  … knowing that it (or they) will be of a much higher quality (and so much likelier to succeed) than might have been the case earlier (that is, since early April).

URANUS RETROGRADE: JUST LIKE MERCURY RETRO?

Now, as far as Uranus "doin' the backward boogie" goes, my advice is similar to the above in many respects.

The main differences are these:

(1) Uranus represents your individuality (whereas Mercury represents your intellectual expression)

and

(2) the time frames that apply to Uranus are much longer--months, rather than weeks (as is the case with Mercury).

THE WIZARD OF INDIVIDUALITY: YOU'RE SO UNUSUAL

As the Wizard of Individuality, Uranus symbolizes two things:

(1) whatever one might consider to be most “unusual” about you

and

(2) whatever one might consider to be your particular brand of “creative genius.”

For example, if you wear flip-flops to events where everyone else is wearing dress shoes, then that’s kinda unusual. And if you wear dress shoes at events where everyone else wears flip-flops … Well, that’s kinda unusual, too.

So what matters here is not what kind of “shoes” you “wear.”

What matters is how much they “fit in” with social norms, and behaviors, and expectations (i.e., what other people want or expect you to do, what they do, what you want / expect yourself to do, etc.).

BENT

Regarding your particular brand of creative genius:

Here, I’m NOT referring to your IQ (which may be way up there … or not ;-)  ). I’m referring to some thing or things for which you might seem to have a natural, innate, or intuitive talent (in other words, a real bent or knack).

Now, about the time frames that apply to Uranus…

Uranus last turned direct in early December of last year; and now that he’s turning retro this week, he’ll stay that way until the middle of this coming December.

Therefore, I offer … for your living pleasure … this advice about how to make the most of Uranus Retro Time...

URANUS (TAKE ONE): "NOT THE BOY NEXT DOOR"

Think about whatever sorts of ways you might have considered expressing your individuality (i.e., your “unusualness” / creative genius)... without actually giving them a try... since December of last year.

Now, from this month until this coming December, take time to review, refine, revise … re-whatever!...  your evil schemes ;-) for how to express your individuality.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come December, you and your ideas will be Ready for Prime Time.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come December, you can act on one or more of your "Quirky" Inspirations ... knowing that it (or they) will be of a much higher quality (and so much likelier to succeed) than might have been the case earlier (that is, since December of last year).

NOTE: In the case of Uranus, also consider to what extent... and in what ways... you might have considered trying to keep your “unusualness” / ingenuity under wraps.

The opposite of individuality (Uranus) is conformity (the dark side or “shadow side” of Uranus)... and, when it comes to Uranus, conformity can be a hazard for all of us.

(Nothing says that we have to let conformity trip us up, but it is a hazard.)

URANUS (TAKE TWO): "OOPS!... I DID IT AGAIN"

Likewise, think about whatever sorts of ways that you might have already expressed your individuality since last December.

Now, from this month until this coming December, take time to review, refine, revise … re-whatever! … the way or ways in which you express your individuality.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come December, you’ll be ready to sing out loud, sing out strong, “I Am What I Am” to the world.

Lay the groundwork now so that, come December, you can express your ingenuity in new or different ways... knowing that how you do it will be much likelier to garner you success than might otherwise be the case.

NOTE: In the case of Uranus, also consider to what extent ... and in what ways... you might have already tried to keep your “unusualness” / ingenuity under wraps.

Let Uranus Rock Your Life with Greater Freedom

In U.S. history, Independence Day marks a nation's breakaway from a foreign power.

In astrology, Uranus represents where we must "break away" in order to be who we truly are... and in order to be truly fulfilled.

Now that those of us in the U.S. have celebrated one more Independence Day...

The Planets Stand Ready to Guide You

Like other planets in your birth chart, Uranus (a.k.a. "the Great Awakener") stands ready to guide toward certain types of experiences...

... experiences that you truly need ...

... if you're going to have a fulfilling, deeply satisfying life here on Planet Earth.

Uranus: The Wizard of Individuality

In the case of Uranus, he's the Wizard of Individuality. His area of expertise is independence.

Uranus wants to help you inject a major dose of freedom into your life...

... and we're not talking about a mere "breath of fresh air" here.

We're talking about the existential equivalent of a major gust of wind.

Learning Lessons from Uranus: Please Stand by

As some of you know, I'm in the process of moving from Raleigh, North Carolina, to Denver, Colorado...

... and in recent days, I've found it necessary to spend much more of my time than usual on related matters.

Unfortunately, therefore, I've also found it necessary to postpone continuing this (and some other) topics on this blog.

I will do my darnedest to move forward with said topics as soon as possible.

Want Me to Use Your Birth Chart as an Example?

Be the first person to get your birth information* to me...

... and I'll blog about your birth chart, using an alias (not your real name)...

... ASAP in this thread.

To do that, please email all of the following to me at proudphoenix@pobox.com:

1. birth date (M/D/YR)

2. birth city

3. birth state/county

... and (most importantly!) ...

4. an exact, accurate birth time for you ... and...

5. the source of your birth time...

... such as "birth certificate," "person X's memory," etc.

I'll reply to your email, telling you whether I'll use your chart.

Thanks!

Today's Words to the Wise

The Moon is now charging through impatient, adventurous Sag.

Mars, meanwhile, is currently trudging through meticulous, deliberate Virgo.

The above sets up the Moon and Mars for an exact clash (crash?).

That clash / crash takes place at 6:21 pm EDT (GMT - 4 hours).

Two Traps: If and Whenever Circumstances Hamper You

Circumstances may (and I repeat “may”) hamper you between now and 6:21 p.m. tonight (per the above).

Between now and then, as you try to complete a task, achieve an objective, etc., you may run into obstacles.

If you do run into any obstacles, then don't let it get you down or "sink your battleship."

By the same token, don't keep "firing away," sticking to your guns. Don’t keep insisting on getting exactly what you want, when you want, where you want, how you want.

Instead, open yourself up enough to truly consider making some sort of change in your tactics.

Here’s one General Tip For How to Thrive Today…

If only for laughs and giggles, try this:

Instead of falling into either of the two traps described above, keep your eyes on the prize.

Keep your focus on what it is that you’re ultimately trying to accomplish.

(Aim to do this rather than focusing your attention on how you accomplish it).

Dare to try something new.

...and (Oh, Yeah) Here's the Nitty-Gritty about How to Live Life Large Today…

Ask yourself questions, such as the following:

  • “How could I work around this mildly annoying (if not outright infuriating) barrier that currently blocks my way?"
  • "Might it help me keep from popping a blood vessel to change gears and go do something else for a while?”
  • “Who knows? Maybe if I do that, some sort of “Eureka!” moment will get me up and dashing out of my ‘bathtub’ and back to this scene of the ‘crime’ that I’ve been ‘suffering’ here, just now.”
  • “I mean, really… Doing that could only be better than hangin’ here and beating my head against a wall.”

By the way, please note this….

Caution: Your Earthly Experiential Mileage (EEM) May Vary

In other words, yes, the Moon and Mars are squaring off about 10 hours from now.

And perhaps I am your favorite oh-so-wise ;-) local astrologer.

Even so, nothing sez that you’ll necessarily run into any frustration or fury whatsoever, within yourself / without yourself.

You might run into such frustration, or fury, or both…

… and you might not.

But If You Do Run Into Some Such Peskiness...

If you run into such peskiness, while you’re out and about, roamin’ round Planet Earth today...

... then consider my writing here to be words to The Wise.

O Wise One...

... May you live in excitingly challenging (and, of course, interesting) times today. ;-)

  2. Broaden our horizons.
  3. Attend to matters of principle.
